Ancient Etruscan sculptures, end of the 4th century to the beginning of the 3th century BC.
The horses were found in pieces by the famous archeologist Pietro Romanelli in 1938. Together with the horses, Romanelli brought to light the remains of what is considered to be the largest Etruscan temple ever unearthed.
The winged horses decorated the front of the temple, the pediment, consisting of the triangular section found above the horizontal structure (entablature). The winged horses once pulled a two-wheeled chariot mounted by a god to whom the temple was dedicated.
