Pit of oracle bones (甲骨) at Anyang Yinxu, China.
Oracle bones are pieces of turtle plastron or bone used for divination during the late Shang Dynasty (1766-1050 BCE). They were heated and cracked, then typically inscribed using the Oracle Bone Script, which was a bronze pin.
Yinxu was rediscovered in 1899, and is now known as one of China’s largest and oldest archaeological sites.

In fact all the features that set Anyang apart from other sites make their first appearance about this time: inscribed oracle bones, enormous tombs, countless sacrificial burials, and chariot burials. No earlier site approaches Anyang in the scale of human sacrifice; no tomb is so rich as that of Wu Ding’s consort Fu Hao; and the oracle bones are the first clear evidence for writing in China.
